Four years and a big award to boot! Congratulations! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the interview with you and learning about your philosophy on life. It shines through you.
The photograph of the two ladies hauling ice in 1918 struck me because of the many kinds of work that women did when the men went off to war and there was a labor shortage. My grandmother, for example, who lived in Hyde Park worked on a farm in the Shenandoah Valley.
As usual, your column brought up a few sentimental memories. I don't think my mother every stopped calling the refridgerator the "icebox." Secondly, I fondly remember those delicious chocolate wafers. There was nothing else like them.
Thanks for another great column and again, heartiest congratulations.
Thank you so much, Gabrielle! I love yellow in a kitchen (I added the lemon 🍋 wallpaper) SO cheerful! I would have been sad if I couldn’t take the cutting board with me, so glad I could!
What a lovely comment, Melanie, thank you so much! ❤️ ps — I’m reading Graydon Carter’s (When the Going Was Good) book and thought “Melanie would love this!”
I don’t think I’ve seen a photo of this 1927 kitchen but it is stunning in its own way. Ice box cakes were one of my early posts, so I’m glad to see the food world is still excited about them. Here’s to year 5 🥂
Your cutting board lunches were a particular delight to me — a little slice of homemade glamour. Also I love your cultural pieces — Judith Jones! Georgia O’Keeffe’s cookbook! Old restaurants and hotels! — Congratulations on 4 years🍽️ 🕰️ 🎊

Andrea, thank you so much, you are always so gracious and supportive and I truly appreciate it! ❤️
Congratulations! 🍾
That kitchen was such a gem. I can just feel that particular type of cabinet when you open it.
And I love that you have the cutting board.
For years my mother painted all her kitchens bright yellow. So cheery!
(Inexplicably she shifted to purple for her last kitchen—I can’t say I was a fan 😂).

1. Congrats! I have enjoyed every issue!
2. The wallpaper in your old apartment! 💜
3. Sweet history on the icebox/cake.
Thanks so much, Amie! (I added the wallpaper 🍋 )
Four more years, if you please Jolene!
