That tart is a dream to look at, Jolene!

And so easy, Sinù! I love the color of cranberries, like little jewels ❤️

I'll attempt a blueberry version I think, will keep you (and Kate) posted!

Expand full comment

Excellent, you will probably want to add cornstarch to the blueberry filling and adjust the sugar (for 2 cups of blueberries I’d use about half cup of sugar and 1 /2 TBSP cornstarch.) Kate, if you see this what do you think?

Expand full comment

Cornstarch is a great addition.

Thank you Jolene! I have a bag of frozen bluebs and a few of the red ones, I wonder it's best to defrost/cook them first or I can just chuck them in as they are

No need to cook before, Sinú!

Great :) thank you for the tips, you're the best 😘

That image of you and your grandmother is precious! Thanks for sharing it.

You inspired me posting it with your comment last week! 😊

Also - that cranberry crostata looks amazing. I don't know that I trust myself to make it, but I'm tempted to try.

Kate’s pie crust is simple and never fails, Jillian! And the filling you just pile in the center, you can just fold it over the edges(don’t have to pleat it) let me know how it goes and reach out with any questions. Loved the Café Anne piece! :)

Thanks for your confidence in me. My family is convinced that I can’t cook, but this might be the recipe to win them over!! And thanks! The Anne post was fun to write!

That’s the spirit! Also: serve with ice cream or whipped cream, you’ll have a showstopper, Jillian. Also, also: you can also make one with apples since Kate’s recipe is for two crusts. 😊

Jolene, your crostata looks wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing info about my upcoming classes and workshops, too. I often think of this time of year as The Pie Season!

Thank YOU for your gorgeous recipes, Kate! And I agree, it is indeed Pie Season! 🥧 ❤️

The crostata is lovely, Jolene! I'm loving the history of The Automat, and I'll be tuning in on November 22. The photo is precious, what wonderful memories!❤️

Thank you, Pam! We will have a virtual ‘watch’ party of The Automat! ❤️

Love the photo, little Jolene! And the tart and for reminding me of the cranberry controversy. Do think Thanksgiving is the holiday meal where exceptions rule.

Dig the bangs and the leggings 🤣

It's nice that people become so attached to their holiday traditions. I would be a hard "no" on the jello mold, your crostata, however, looks amazing! Happy Thanksgiving, Jolene.

Happy Thanksgiving, Vicki! Thank you so much ❤️

Divine! Jolene, I have been tasked with making not one but two apple pies/tarts for upcoming thanksgiving events....I’m looking for a recipe that’s pretty simple and failsafe, one I will do with my daughter. Any suggestions?

Expand full comment

Yes, Christene! Kate McDermott’s pie recipe is perfect and failsafe. One pie and one crostata? And folding over the dough of the crostata is perfect for baking with your daughter ☺️ Kate’s apple pie doesn’t even require peeling apples, they soften in the process. I am linking here to a post I did all about apple pie and Kate’s method! ❤️https://open.substack.com/pub/timetravelkitchen/p/time-travel-kitchen-aa0?utm_source=direct&r=jkx01&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Thank you Jolene! I recorded The Automat yesterday and just finished watching it. What a great show! I had never heard of an Automat before and I never would have watched this if you hadn't written about it. I can always count on you to provide so much reading pleasure in your newsletters. So unique, so glad I subscribed.

Thank you so much, Gayla, so kind of you! Glad you saw it and loved it! I’m going to watch it again, so much there! ✨

In my still jet-lagged brain I thought you came up with a new dessert called a cranberry kerfuffle! 🤣 That crostata looks gorgeous, as does the jello mold, but there might be a kerfuffle in my living room if I don’t make the usual apple and pumpkin pies! Happy Thanksgiving, Jolene!

Expand full comment

You’re not alone! A friend wrote me saying they loved the Cranberry Kerfuffle! I think that’s what we should call it, Ruth! 😂 Happy Thanksgiving, Ruth!

It's been so christened! A new dessert à la Jolene is born!

This Instagram exchange is so funny! My family always made pretzel jello salad for Thanksgiving (in addition to cranberry sauce) and I never realized it wasn’t normal until I left for college 😂 definitely a polarizing food!!

Expand full comment

‘Didn’t realize it wasn’t normal’ 🤣 Right after I read your comment I saw that one of my favorite people, Joy Wilson aka Joy the Baker was making a cranberry cream pie (with cranberry Jell-O) and topped with dark chocolate coated pretzels 🥨 I’m in for that! Happy Thanksgiving, Sam! 🍁

Oh wow, what a delicious twist! I’ll have to suggest that to my family 😂 happy Thanksgiving to you too, Jolene!
