Jolene! Thanks so much for the lovely shout-out! I absolutely LOVE the idea of a Time Travel Advent Calendar and now cannot wait until December! Mind you, before that we have November and it will be VINCENT PRICE MONTH over at @silverscreensuppers.substack.com There will be a competition that I feel is right up your street. It involves a rather elaborate snacky thing to go with drinky things - a large amount of cheese is involved... 🧀🍸
Caviar on an airplane food tray??? I was clearly born in the wrong decade!!
Looking forward to your advent calendar Jolene! I much prefer food themed calendars. I'm planning one as well—remember the Holiday Tour you participated in last year with us? That was so much fun. This year it will be simpler, but no less breathlessly delicious... it IS chocolate after all, and who can resist that!
There's something magical about an Advent calendar, any advent calendar, but an Advent calendar newsletter is an especially brilliant idea! Filing it away so I can copy you next year, Jolene!
Your article popped up just as I was sitting down with a cuppa and scone. (Store bought). I always cook my eggs in olive oil, but never knew of your method of spooning it over the whites to make it crispy. Will try that next time. Thanks again for another great post.
My grandparents used to talk wistfully about the Pan Am Clipper flying boats from Buenos Aires to Montevideo across the River Plate. Time for a well mixed Martini but not for a four course meal!
Yesterday, I got off an overnight American Airlines flight. My meal looked nothing like the one you pictured. I cannot imagine anyone complementing the company for its marvelous food. I ate mushy pasta and avoided the bright white soft dinner roll and processed cheese. To its credit, the chefs had put a romaine lettuce salad in a plastic container and provided an olive oil and vinegar mix rather than a colored and artificially flavored concoction. Airline food has a way to go to catch up the advances in flying.
The photo of the TV dinners also struck me. It reminded me of my mother. My mother loved to cook and she was an excellent one but when events of mothering three children and the day collided, she ocasionally pulled from the freezer a TV dinner. My siblings and I didn't like them or even think they were fun but I now recognize they saved the day and maybe some sanity.
The advent calendar is a great idea! Leave it to you to dream up something lovely and surprising. I already look forward to them.
I actually liked Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks. They were a special treat.
A hurried-dinner-on-a weekend dish my mother sometimes prepared included sauteed onions, weenies, and ketchup or tomato sauce with melted chedder on top all cooked in a frying pan. That did not go over well with me. Please don’t write a post on that meal! I’d love to see one on airplane food though.
I wasn’t allowed to watch a lot of TV as a kid, so I have a lot of catching up to do—including this episode of The Twilight Zone. 🛸The episode that sticks in my mind (probably seen as an adult) is the one in which a frozen turkey leg turns out to be the murder weapon—perfect for Thanksgiving!
Thanks for another fabulous read, Jolene! The Time Travel Advent Calendar idea is sheer genius! Can’t wait! Happy Halloween! 🎃
The airline food was so glamorous. I know most people complain about airline food but I actually enjoy it, but perhaps it’s more the association with going on holidays rather than the actual food! Look forward to the advent calendar.
I love being a subscriber! I am so sorry to have missed the Snacky Drinky party and hope to attend in December. Your posts are this delicious mix of archival nostalgia and cozy descriptions. My sister and I grew up in the 1970s and our parents would play bridge and host parties on Friday nights and we’d get TV dinners and Love Boat and we thought those tinfoil meal compartments were the pinnacle of glam! Much goodwill from your admirers in Toronto, Jolene. Xox
Sydney, what a lovely comment, I’m very touched and appreciative, thank you so very much! Love your description of the Friday night bridge parties your parents hosted, (those little TV Dinner compartments! ☺️) Looking forward to meeting you at the next Snacky-Drinky! ❤️
That brunch - sorry “late breakfast” - looks sumptuous! I like to flip over my egg for a couple seconds to crisp the white but keep the yellow runny but your method sounds easier! 🍳 Also, Anna Brones of “Creative Fuel” has been releasing a creative advent calendar for the past 7 years and it’s a real delight (check it out!)
Definitely try this method, Sabrina, just tilt and spoon some of the oil over the whites, the bottom gets nice and crisp! Hope you’re well, I see I have an email from you, will read now! xx

Large amounts of cheese 🧀 you say? Sounds good to me! I need to run over to silver screen asap! Thanks again, Jenny,
glad you’re excited about the Advent calendar! xx
It’s hilarious to imagine someone against the word “brunch” when (I guess) the portmanteau was still new?
Yes! Here’s what he says in the book:
“Entertaining at a late breakfast (or ‘brunch’ to use a word I dislike) has become increasingly popular.)
I love the advent calendar idea. 🥰
Yay! I’m excited about it, thanks, Mary! ❤️😃

I need to do a whole post about airline food in the 50s, Birgitte! Excited for your chocolate 🍫 holiday delights, can’t wait to hear more!
I would love that Jolene. So sad where it's gone, today. You're lucky if you get pretzels.
A shame, for sure :(
We call it 2nd breakfast…a la Frodo and Sam. 😉
☺️

I feel the same way about Advent calendars, Domenica! The more the merrier advent calendars next year! 🎄 ✨

Thank you, Judy! Tell me if you try the spooning method, I find I get better results!

I’m thinking of doing a whole post on flight meals in their heyday, and, yes, TV dinners saved some sanity, and Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks, too! 😂xx

Happy Halloween, Ruth! Are you still in NM? Glad you like the idea of the advent calendar ☺️ I’m excited about it, too. Xx
Thanks, Jolene! We’re finally back as of last night. From 7,000 feet to sea level in 2 days!
Wow!
Love what you did with the Late Breakfast and your daily Advent calendar will be the joy of my December!
Aww, thank you, Amie! ☺️
What a great lazy river of memories and background info.
Thank you, Melanie and I love “lazy river of memories”!
What a charming post and I’m excited for the TTK advent calendar !
Thank you so much, Sally, I’m excited about it, too! 😃

Yes, in the end it’s all about the destination, not the journey 🤣 (I’m enjoying my own dumb joke 😂) hope you’re well, Julia!
