So exciting! We’re actually working on a whole Italian beef feature for an upcoming issue of Chicago magazine - definitely the sandwich of the moment right now!
How exciting that you were able to attend Jolene. I admit to never having taken more than a passing interest prior to this year, but I did listen to a couple of the speeches. Even from afar it did feel like being witness to an historic occasion, being there IRL must have been fantastic.
No! (I should’ve included that, Jeff, it’s a whole newsletter on its own!😂)I held the elevator in my building for a woman who was running to make it — I’d never seen her before — she was staying in an apartment here during the DNC (I didn’t know this at the time —and apparently staying here before as part of the convention planning) —we started chatting — a TOTALLY random encounter, I said how exciting it was in the city (not realizing at this point she was part of the event) and she said “Do you want to go?” This was on Monday, the first day of the DNC —she said to send her my info. I did and didn’t hear back, figured she was COMPLETELY busy — and then on Thursday at 3pm this lovely woman sent a text apologizing she’d just seen my message and she was leaving my credential at the front desk! There are several morals to this story, I should write about them! Thanks, Jeff!
Can you believe that I've never actually had an Italian beef?! It's a serious oversight on my part. When I started watching The Bear, and all the Italian beef food porn therein, I realized the error of my ways...need to fix this problem next time I visit!
We will do an Italian beef tour! Amy at American Weekender commented that she’s doing a whole piece coming soon in Chicago Magazine, that will be our guide!
How wonderful that you got to go to the convention on its final evening! NOT JEALOUS AT ALL 😅
I watched the giardiniera video ~ definitely different than my mom’s giardiniera. I’ll bet it’s fantastic on those sandwiches. Adding it to my must-eat list for when I visit!
Wow, talk about having a front row on history (or maybe I should say herstory)! Now that’s a scoop! I kept wondering what it must have been like to be in Chicago last week—now I know: Those balloons on the ceiling! Chicago Beef! A pop-up Grill! Nerve-wracking, I bet, but thrilling too. Thanks for taking us along, Jolene.
😆 love the “envy meter”, Mel! Thanks so much, I don’t think I’ve ever been at a louder or more energized event! Thanks for letting me know about Ted Lasso! xx
My husband was born in Fox Lake, Illinois so I married into a die hard Fratello's family. Being from the land of cheese steaks, I have learned to appreciate Italian beef, especially if it's on decent bread. We are heading out your way next month for a Chicago visit and Cheese Days in Wisconsin, so there will be butter burgers and Italian beef in my future and I can't wait.
Just googled Fratello’s, looks great (I’m still on a learning curve 😂) I love Philly cheesesteaks and your Cheese Days itinerary is right up my alley. Thanks, Alycia!
Amazing, Jolene!! So cool that Time Travel Kitchen usually covers history, but this time you were actually part of it yourself!
Thank you so much, Sam, I’ve never gotten dressed-up faster to get somewhere! 😆

Can’t wait for that issue, Amy! They are so good!
Great that you got the invite. I was right there with you via your article! Thoroughly entertaining and informative, Jolene!
Hi, Kay! Thank you, it was such a great, last-minute surprise! xx
What an infectiously joyful piece, Jolene. We were certainly with you in spirit!
Sabrina is 'wet' and I am 'dry' when it comes to a beef sandwich! Have you ever had a 'French dip' at Philippe's in downtown LA?
Thank you so much, Marco! I haven’t!

It was really something, Julia, was so glad to be there! xx
Congrats Jolene--did I miss how you snagged the invite?

I've got both goosebumps (OMG, you were there for Kamala's speech!!!) and a growling stomach after reading this, Jolene!
YES! 😆 I’m emailing you! What was your go-to Italian beef joint here, Maddie?

I can’t believe you got to go!! How exciting!! 🙌

It was really something, Ruth! Thank you for restacking! Xx
My envy is turned up on high! LOL! What a historic night to be there! We watched at home and felt the electricity through the tv screen!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for The Bear Beef recipe! I am giddy right now!
ps.. Ted Lasso is coming back! (in case you hadn't heard)

I can only imagine the feeling inside that arena. It must have been electric! ⚡️
It was, Erin, and LOUD! (In the best way 😉)
