Really enjoyed this 🤩 Moving forward, I’ll think of you as Peggy Olson!

And where is the Carroll/ Ogilvy house?? Let’s go! 🐇

You also got me curious about shaking the martini “30 times” 🍸Is that a standard shake number? Or specific to pickle martinis?

Expand full comment

Forgot to add the house is in the UK, I think it’s still a private home, I need to research!

Lol! Me and Peggy! Thank you! It takes about 10-15 seconds to shake a cocktail till the shaker starts to frost. I’ve found shaking 30 times gets me there (without watching the second hand ⏰ 😂)

But rule of thumb is 10-15 seconds. I’m going to edit that in :)

I’m curious about the specific number of shakes, too.

I love revisiting mid-century Manhattan with your posts! It feels like a time portal. Also love this: "Big ideas are usually simple ideas."

Okay...I'm off to have a pickle martini!

Also, thanks for the very kind words about Noted! ❤️

A Birthday Pickle Martini 🍸 🥒🎉!!! Thanks, Jillian, it boggles my mind that it was a half-century ago — but P.J. Clarke’s remains!!❤️

Interesting tidbit on Ogilvy’s food background. In an earlier life I was a copywriter at a California ad agency and “On Advertising” was my bible.

And those pickles!!

I thought that was interesting too, Amie. I love learning this about your writing background!

Also: the thing about Ogilvy growing up in Carroll’s house, wow!

The Heinz ad is priceless..and your story is, too! I loved Mad Men—what a brilliant show.

I laughed out loud when I first saw the ad, so cute and also insane 😂

Thanks, Joan!

Not a surprise, but I must say I am blown away by the history, personal reflection, corporate nostalgia (in a good, fond big brand way, in this case) and full circle to pickle pin <----> to martini. brava!

Thank you, Jess! 🍸 🥒

Dear Jolene--I loved hearing your story as a copywriter!!!! I had to search for you, because I'm no longer receiving email notices. Much love to you, Jamie

Oh, no! Could they be going to spam? I will make sure your email is still active on my list, Jamie! ❤️

So fun to hear more about your youth in NYC, Jolene! Peggy was always my favorite Mad Men character, and now the two of you will forever be intertwined in my mind! 🤩

Love it! 😂 I used to especially love the scenes when she and Joan would get exasperated and start venting together!

Thanks Jo! As a Secretary in the late 1960's and '70's, cheers to you too! Love you stories.

❤️ I devoured Mad Men. I love/hated Peggy. I felt sick watching them all smoke and drink - but I’d try your Martini! I was imagining you sitting in a room with your fellow typists. Strange to think of that now we all use computers.

Thanks again for a great read 🍸

I’m watching Mad Men for the very first time, and l’m loving it! And I enjoyed your post. Thank you for sharing. Here’s to the brave, ground breaking women and men of the 50’s and 60’s and beyond!

How did I not know about the pickle charm and pin? Not like I'm an expert on Heinz or the World's Fair, but pickles -- these I know. (I always learn something from you, Jolene!)

Hahaha! Love it! You can get a pack of 5 for $10! (Or maybe it’s a pack of 10 for $5 🤔 ) Thanks, Sarah! 🥒

SO many ways this post resonates, Jolene! I was a secretary for a time in the ‘70s, though in San Francisco, not New York, but the Mad Men era was still alive and well (and I do remember those maddening IBM Selectrics!). The tales of David Ogilvy are so much fun to read. He was revered in the ad world when I was a scribe at Ad Age, but I never bothered to learn about his background. And then you include Heinz, pickle charms and cocktails--all in one post! 🥒 Your writing is a pleasure and a treasure, Jolene!

Ruth! I didn’t know you were at Ad Age! You must have stories! As always, thanks for your kind and encouraging words, my friend. ❤️

Expand full comment

Yes, I do have stories, Jolene! I made my one and only trip to Chicago when I worked for Crain Communications Inc., Ad Age’s owner, which was based there in the 80s. I never forgot seeing that awesome skyline!🤗

One day soon you’ll visit and we will dish about all of it! 😃

Absolutely!👏👏👏

Interesting piece Jolene! I took my illustration portfolio around to some of the big agencies back in the 80s before anyone had heard of sharing their work through a website. Mad Men was such a great show.
