I never had an meal at Schrafts. I lived in Montréal, not New York City. But I have memories of my mother taking me for a delicious breakfast, when we went into the city for my many hospital visits and investigations. Our breakfast was much humbler, but I found it delicious and remember it to this day. It was a Western egg sandwich. It was heaven, consisting of an egg omelet with green peppers and onions. Sparce by today's rich standards. But it was truly a highlight, until at 7 or 8 my mother sent me to Montréal by myself for my treatment and I couldn't access a meal like that any longer.
Jolene, it sounds like you've made *incredible* progress on the proposal—I'm delighted for you! And now I'm definitely craving a butterscotch sundae...
I think Gilbert would deeply approve of being coupled with a hot butternut sundae. You've brightened my mood especially since this also announces you are back!
Your story brings back happy memories of going shopping with my grandmother. She would take me to the finest stores in San Francisco for shopping around Union Square, and North Beach for special Italian ingredients.
That's a beautiful illustration on the menu. An intricate scene captured with quick, abbreviated strokes.
The idea of seeking “stubborn gladness” amidst sorrow couldn’t be more timely as we face so much chaos, fear and tragedy. For many of us it’s an essential life affirming choice at a particularly difficult moment politically and personally. Making a butterscotch sundae in memory of a grandmother, or, in my case, a pound cake (with Swans Down cake flour no less!) in memory of a cousin, is a vote for joy and life. Thanks for sharing so much, Jolene, and kudos on this book proposal. It definitely sounds like it will be a joyous read.
Jolene - wonderful post…. You are such a beautiful writer - your story of your trip to manhattan with your lovely grandmother fills me with - much needed “gladness”. And I can’t wait to make the sundae….
I don’t think I ever ate at Schrafts but I want to make hot butterscotch sundaes ASAP, and everything about them reminds me of my grandmother, so thank you!
And, I completely concur on well-being and joy! I refuse to let them take that from me, though some weeks like last week, really took a toll.
Sending love from across the pond - an ice-cream sundae seems the perfect treat when feeling blue (although predictive text thinks I mean feeling blithe!) I am gonna dig out my sundae glasses ❤️❤️
Way to go on your proposal! You are my inspiration.
Agree, very excited for you!
Thank you so much, Mary!
Thank you, Amie, we are fellow travelers! 🤗

So much fun thank you. My mother also has a fondness for butterscotch sundaes, a throwback to soda counter times I'm sure.
For sure, just the words “soda counter” make me smile! Thanks, Laura!
