Fabulous, evocative post, as always, Jolene! How wonderful to be in touch with a friend from so long ago, to have that great class photo, to meet again and eat bologna, cheese and potato chip sandwiches! And those mashed potatoes—I’m afraid my mother used margarine, and it wasn’t her best dish!Bourdain’s book sounds like a must-have, and I hope to attend your “snacky-drinky” zoom party! I’ll bring some virtual snacks from wherever I happen to be—New Mexico, I think. Maybe something à la Georgia O’Keeffe!
“I forgot that friends are the kindest mirrors” 🥹 Thank you so much for this, Mary, really love your poem. Also, loved that you were at the Purple Pig! If you come back to Chicago, dm me if you’d like to have coffee! Thanks again. ☺️
So excited you are coming, Jenny! You’re gonna love this: the description on that photo of Roz from Getty Images says she is “wearing her famous gold chatelaine on her wrist, made from presents given to her by various famous friends” Don’t you love it?! Can’t wait to see your mother’s bracelet! ❤️
Oh woweeeeee, what tails that chatelaine could tell. PLUS, although I have a beautiful charm bracelet, now I am absolutely desperate to have a chatelaine…
My brother (who lives in Champaign ;) took his wife to Paris a couple years ago and she didn’t like the food.. when I asked her why she said “they use too much butter.” To which I responded: I can’t live without it (and might explain why croissants are my favorite food 🥐 ).
Another butter anecdote: at Thanksgiving with friends a few years ago, we went around the table taking turns sharing what we were grateful for.. when it was the 4 year old kid’s turn, he exclaimed with wild enthusiasm: BUTTER!!! 🧈 😁
Sounds like the weekend with your friend was wonderful, Jolene. Cannot beat potato chips directly on the sandwich! Oh, and do I miss the genius of Anthony Bourdain...That is another cookbook I'll have to get—I didn't realize the 20th anniversary edition was out, so thank you!
Last week, I used a potato ricer for the first time in my life . Fun to use and unbelievably smooth results. I love it. Childhood friends and bologna sandwiches - it does not get better than that.
Mashed potatoes are a bit of a winter staple at our place - must be the English heritage - although I do try to ease up on the butter and they are also good with olive oil if I'm pretending to be a little more healthy! And how wonderful are those friendships that last a lifetime - something to be treasured.
😂I’ve had a life times worth of mashed potatoes and in nine place ordered a side of vegetables to go with the mashed potatoes and got boiled potatoes! Currently in Bath heading south.
Happy to be a new friend soon-to-be old friend. Long Island 4ever….your canapés are 👑👑👑👑

I love the pics of you and your friend then and now and the word guffawing. 🥰
Thank you so much, Mary, I love the word, too! 😂
I think you might like these poems. One is a favorite of mine on friendship and one I wrote after seeing an old friend. https://open.substack.com/pub/pocketfulofprose/p/old-friend-found-again?r=qqbxq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Terrific! ☕️ 😃
That pic of Rosalind Russell is amazeballs and has prompted me to get my mum’s 1970s charm bracelet out for the Snacky-Drinky event! I am excited!

Great stuff, Jolene! Sadly we never made it to Les Halles when AB was there. Did you?
Thanks so much, I did go several times when I lived in New York and always had the same thing: steak frites 😋

I agree, such a difference, so worth it to get a ricer!

Truly something to be treasured, Julia! ☺️ Where are you now, and do they have mashed potatoes? 😉
