Gorgeous!! That Warhol pic is divine! It’s funny, because I don’t really like pears. As a child I won a competition where we had to eat a pear hanging from a string, hands tied behind our backs. I ate it quickly, obviously 😅 and haven’t enjoyed a pear since! Except Nashi pears. It’s strange what childhood experiences can do to us!
As for pumpkin, it’s strictly a savoury experience for me, not having grown up with the US pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice addictions. I love reading about it though - and have eaten it once when a US friend made it for us (although she had great trouble making it without ‘canned pumpkin’ which is not a thing in Australia!).
Thanks for another great piece of writing-pie Jolene!
So much delicious, Jolene, and after a successful Queen of Puddings this week, must give Eve's Pear Pud a go. But pies have definitely given puds a run for their money lately, and I have to give a massive shout-out to Kate McDermott's pie books and online classes!
This recipe brings back long-forgotten memories of the years when my uncle would send us Harry & David pears around the holidays! That box was always such a treat to open. :)
(Also, agreed that Art of the Pie is 100% the best pie cookbook out there!)
And one of the pears 🍐 was always wrapped in gold! Lovely memory, Maddie. And I heartily agree about Art of the Pie -- Kate’s pie crusts and ours are the best I’ve ever made and the photography in her book is so gorgeous!
Since I live a couple hours away from Kate's Pie Cottage, I was lucky enough to snag a spot in one of her classes back in 2018...a serious bucket list experience. She's as wonderful as her pie crust recipe!
Same! And she makes it so easy and approachable (which I never thought I'd say about pie crusts). Next time you're out this way, we'll have to make a Pie Cottage pilgrimage!
Once again, Jolene, your post brings good thoughts of my Mom. She made a wonderful pear pie, so good! I am dreaming of that pie today! And Pear Eve's Pudding is a new one, and I promise I'm going to make it! I hope all is well in Chicago!❤️
Good morning, Jolene! Been baking chocolate Babka here. I’m new to braided enriched bread baking. It’s fun and rewarding. Love pears. Fascinating history as always. Enjoy your day!
Pear and a sponge layer - doesn’t get much better than that!
Agreed, Julia! This sponge is gorgeous, by the way, really good recipe.

I Know! 😅 it’s clearly etched in my memory 🍐😬

WowWowWow! You’ve been to Pie Cottage! ✨I’ve never made more delicious pie crusts than the ones from Kate’s book 🙌

An entertaining story Jolene. I especially enjoyed the apple becoming the hook in the Biblical story so long afterwards!!!
Thanks, Mark! Hope you’re well!
Im committed to pumpkin pie, but pear looks like a great second choice.
🎃🍐
I am ready for the cookie Olympics to begin!
Let the games begin! 💪 🍪 😂

Fascinating context re the apple/evil/Bible - thank you for sharing that NPR piece, and of course, the pies!!
Thanks, Amelia! I got a kick out of the NPR piece!
Star Market. That took me back.
Oh, wow, Amie. Is it still around?
I think it was swallowed up by Shaw’s?
I’ll look into it!

Chocolate Babka for the win! 🙌❤️
