And who could ever forget the unbelievable Nixon campaign slogan: "They Can't Lick Our Dick"!

I’m howling! 🤣

Now all I want is one of those buttons. And maybe a nap.

Fortunately that passed us by!

Great story, Jolene 👏

There's a whole WIki page full of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._presidential_campaign_slogans

What????????

Expand full comment

🤣 oh, those wacky campaigns!

Expand full comment

It's for real! Almost as amusing as Democratic nominee Al Smith's 1928 Anti-Prohibition slogan: "Make your wet dreams come true."

Expand full comment

🤣I should have talked to you before I wrote this piece, Michael! It would have been much more interesting ! 🤣

Oh, I dunno. I thought your post was swell!

brilliant writing, as always. I love these windows into American culture. I will be attempting a Wisconsin butter burger for my husband this weekend!

Thank you, Wendy, glad you enjoyed and let me know how the Butter Burger 🍔 turns out! ❤️

Wow, what a convention that was and what a year was 1968! Thanks for reminding us of both the kitsch and the chaos of that memorable time, Jolene! Lucky you to be in the thick of the action next week! Exciting, fun and hopefully no mayhem will ensue!

Thanks, Ruth, hoping so, too!

As always, great article! I a political junkie myself and I’m finding this year‘s presidential season like a slow motion train wreck. I can’t stop it and I can’t look away from it either! I’ll be watching the coverage along with you and hoping for the best for our nation and for all of us. Oh, and I’ll be eating a butter burger while I do! Everyone knows that butter makes everything better - Love you!

Expand full comment

That’s our campaign slogan, Kathleen! “Butter Makes Everything Better!” 🧈 😂 love ya right back! xx

I’ll get to designing our convention costumes ASAP. We can call ourselves The Butter Beauties!

Love it! 😆 Let’s call Barbra “Like BUTTAH” Streisand 🧈 🎶 support!

Another great piece, Jolene. I loved the convention paraphranalia and music. Amazing what people think up and do. I enjoyed reading the comments, especially the ones for the Nixon campaign. Geez!!

I hope you'll keep us posted on what kooky stuff you see on the streets.

Thanks, Andrea, I got a real kick out of those, too! 😆 will report on all I see! 😃

My husband used to run a national kid reporter program, and they covered the elections, so my husband has been to a few conventions ... he was at the infamous RNC where Clint Eastwood spoke to a chair!!!! Truly surreal experiences, though I think the "fashion" has gotten less interesting.

Expand full comment

What an experience for the kids! And, for your husband! 🪑 😆

Expand full comment

Yeah he covered the 2008 and 2012 elections. He kinda misses it but is grateful he got out in time to miss the Trump era ... oof.

The convention restaurant history is *fascinating.* Though I’m still stuck on the Macarena gif and the Malört reference! 😂 I know it’s not the original, but I’m really craving a butter burger and frozen custard from Culver’s after reading this edition…

Expand full comment

“Welcome to Delicious” 😂🍔 🍦 I love Culver’s!!! I should really have linked to Malört so the rest of the country can enjoy 🤣

I think it’s better that you didn’t!! 🤢🤣

😂 I had friends in town last weekend and “introduced” them to the nectar of the gods 🤢

Do you...like these friends?!?! 🤣

Expand full comment

Hahaha, very much! It’s like a rite of passage ! 😂

Expand full comment

A hazing, is more like it 😉

I had no idea that these were such huge events - 20,000 media is mind boggling! I’ll view the coverage from an entirely different perspective now I know more!

Expand full comment

And then there are the thousands of delegates and visitors! 😂 They are events with a capital “E”, Julia!

Another wonderful piece Jolene - enjoy the convention- I went to a Republican Convention in San Diego- it was fun in a weird way - LoL

We must talk, lol! 🤣

Thanks for the memories!
