Potato pancakes sound yummy! Love the murals too. Thereβs something about fairs and the exploration of culinary delights that is so fun and comforting. Happy October, Jolene!
I want to go there and eat potato pancakes with you! π I have a vivid memory of visiting that old Main Street at the MSI (I also remember the elevator you take down into the basement for the coal mining exhibit...) but I didnβt know about the Berghoff
I absolutely love the root beer at Berghoff. Did you find anything else out about the near beer? With the non-alcoholic craze right now, do they still sell it? I wonder if itβs similar to or IS Kvass? So many questions! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kvass
Wow and geez, Jolene! My list of Chicago hotspots to visit if/when we come someday just grows longer! The Berghoff sounds like such a marvelous find. That meal looks delicious--and Iβm definitely checking out that potato pancake video/recipe!
The Milwaukee Public Museum has a Streets of Old Milwaukee Exhibit that I have been obsessed with since I was a kid. (I took Matt there a couple of weeks ago and its magic hasn't faded -- he was just as enchanted as I have always been.) So now I have Yesterday's Main Street + The Berghoff to add to my Chicago list -- you had me at wienerschnitzel, obviously -- which is really just an Excuses to Visit Jolene list at this point, let's be honest.
Also: thank god Oscar Meyer came to its Wienermobile senses. I will never utter that other, reprehensible name, as you (and Annette) know π
Iβve never made it to Berghoffβs real life location, Jolene but after reading this I now remember that βtime travelβ street in the awesome Museum of Science & Industry. To be honest, I was utterly transfixed by the only intact German U boat in captivity
What a cool exhibit. I could swear I had a Berghoff cookbook once upon a time. But I'm not seeing it on any of my shelves or any of my piles so maybe I dreamed it.
This looks like a great spot, Jolene! I keep seeing and reading things about the US... perhaps itβs time to start planning a trip π
What a great exhibit and a fascinating trip back in time. My mother is German and your meal at The Berghoff is reminiscent of my childhood favourites.
Losing yourself in an unexpected time-travel moment sounds so wonderful....and those potato pancakesππππ
I wish similar places were still around in Tokyo
I want to visit Chicago! Thanks Jolene for the inspiration.

Ooo! I love this post, Jolene! So much history, and I canβt wait to follow your links to these delicious sounding recipes! Thanks for sharing!
Love the Berghoff! Thank you for telling its story! You are fortunate to live in a city, a real city where you can take yourself out to lunch!

It's amazing that The Berghoff is still alive and well! My excitement mounts...!!! And I agree with you regarding solo outings. π§‘

The liquor license tidbit is so great! Now Iβm thirsty for one of their beers. As a former intern for NOW, I adored *that* anecdote too. βΊοΈ
