Christene, when I sat down on the bench in the nickelodeon I was gone! It was wonderful, I hope you guys visit at some point, thereβs a fairy castle at the MSI that Iβm going to write about soon that your sweet Raf would love! Itβs a tiny, tiny house! β€οΈ ps - I just received a package, about to open! π
Somehow, I've survived even this year's brutal summer. Problem is, with the sudden dip in temperature, my bones have shrunk and now I'm one inch shorter.
How about you? I see you keep enjoying the culinary dolce vita.
Potato pancakes sound yummy! Love the murals too. Thereβs something about fairs and the exploration of culinary delights that is so fun and comforting. Happy October, Jolene!
I want to go there and eat potato pancakes with you! π I have a vivid memory of visiting that old Main Street at the MSI (I also remember the elevator you take down into the basement for the coal mining exhibit...) but I didnβt know about the Berghoff
Yes! When you are home for holidays we will go! The Potato Pancakes were so, so good Leigh! I need another trip to MSI to see all the stuff I didnβt get to because I zoned out in the Yesterdayβs Main Street nickelodeon!
I absolutely love the root beer at Berghoff. Did you find anything else out about the near beer? With the non-alcoholic craze right now, do they still sell it? I wonder if itβs similar to or IS Kvass? So many questions! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kvass
Wow and geez, Jolene! My list of Chicago hotspots to visit if/when we come someday just grows longer! The Berghoff sounds like such a marvelous find. That meal looks delicious--and Iβm definitely checking out that potato pancake video/recipe!
I really think we are, Jolene! Chicagoβand you!βhave been on our radar for a long time, so 2024 is the year! Not sure when, but we will make it happen!π€
The Milwaukee Public Museum has a Streets of Old Milwaukee Exhibit that I have been obsessed with since I was a kid. (I took Matt there a couple of weeks ago and its magic hasn't faded -- he was just as enchanted as I have always been.) So now I have Yesterday's Main Street + The Berghoff to add to my Chicago list -- you had me at wienerschnitzel, obviously -- which is really just an Excuses to Visit Jolene list at this point, let's be honest.
Also: thank god Oscar Meyer came to its Wienermobile senses. I will never utter that other, reprehensible name, as you (and Annette) know π
I need to go to that, Sarah! Hope you and Matt and the girls come to Chicago when the decorations start going up everywhere. I hear The Berghoff really does a beautiful job and after lunch we can all scoot up the block to the Art Institute? Iβm Planning your trip π (notice the βweβ)
Honest to god, someday you and Annette and I are going to be in the same place as the name-that-cannot- be uttered-mobile and insist on riding in it! π€£ππ
LOL! SCREAMING! π€£ ok, so Iβm turning 70 this summer and this is what I need (that came out wrong, too! π€£) Iβm alerting Annette that plans are being made. 70! THE WIENERMOBILE BIRTHDAY! πππ€£
Iβve never made it to Berghoffβs real life location, Jolene but after reading this I now remember that βtime travelβ street in the awesome Museum of Science & Industry. To be honest, I was utterly transfixed by the only intact German U boat in captivity
What a cool exhibit. I could swear I had a Berghoff cookbook once upon a time. But I'm not seeing it on any of my shelves or any of my piles so maybe I dreamed it.
It exists and I just bought it, they sell it at the restaurant! They thought they were going to close in 2006and then Voila, they were back after a shirt closure. Another place to go when you guys visit Chicago at some point (hopefully soon :)
OK now I'm going to scour my shelves and piles. It must be in there somewhere, unless I was dumb enough to give it away (a possibility). And yes to Chicago sooner rather than later!
The Oktoberfest brew was great, and I love the story of the NOW visit even more that I know your connection! I found some info (need to verify) from someone who was there that day and apparently it was all very amicable, like βwhat are you drinking?β and then the women were served. π»
This looks like a great spot, Jolene! I keep seeing and reading things about the US... perhaps itβs time to start planning a trip π
Definitely! And make sure Chicago is on your itinerary, Lisa! π
What a great exhibit and a fascinating trip back in time. My mother is German and your meal at The Berghoff is reminiscent of my childhood favourites.
So good, Julia -- you know! I could eat creamed spinach and potato pancakes daily! Hope youβre well :)
Losing yourself in an unexpected time-travel moment sounds so wonderful....and those potato pancakesππππ

I wish similar places were still around in Tokyo
Hi, Gianni, how are you?
Somehow, I've survived even this year's brutal summer. Problem is, with the sudden dip in temperature, my bones have shrunk and now I'm one inch shorter.
How about you? I see you keep enjoying the culinary dolce vita.
Ooh, sorry to hear, Gianni! Iβm glad autumn is here β and I love the phrase βCulinary Dolce Vitaβ!
I want to visit Chicago! Thanks Jolene for the inspiration.
I would fly there for the exhibit alone!
Amie, I hope you do! (And then weβll have lunch!)
Come and weβll hang out, Vicki! And you can spend time at the Art Institute!
That would be grand!

Thank you, Amy! I hope to be more OTG (iykyk π) Iβm October!

Ooh, Mia, thanks for this link, I will dig a bit more and find out if they still make it. Hope youβre well!

Ruth, I think you and Jeff would love it! Really hoping you are going to visit me in 2024!

Canβt wait! β€οΈ
Ooo! I love this post, Jolene! So much history, and I canβt wait to follow your links to these delicious sounding recipes! Thanks for sharing!
I hope you enjoy, Amanda! The potato pancakes were π
Love the Berghoff! Thank you for telling its story! You are fortunate to live in a city, a real city where you can take yourself out to lunch!
When you come to Chicago, we will go! (Iβm setting up your book tour activities. Alert your editor. π)
Will do!!

THE WIENERMOBILE BIRTHDAY π
π
It's amazing that The Berghoff is still alive and well! My excitement mounts...!!! And I agree with you regarding solo outings. π§‘
Love solo βlunchingβ Pam! Maybe the MSI can be fit into our itinerary? If not, youβll just have to come back! :)
I'm already thinking about a return trip! π

Yes! Next time I go I will explore that and the coal mine!

π I hope you find it! And woohoo to sooner than later in Chicago!
The liquor license tidbit is so great! Now Iβm thirsty for one of their beers. As a former intern for NOW, I adored *that* anecdote too. βΊοΈ
