The peaches are so great this year, and cherries π are just so yum π!! Thank you so much, Alison, we go back to the beginning of this Substack adventure! βΊοΈβ€οΈ
I was so upset when I saw! π 𫨠Glad everyone is ok! Irmaβs peach cake is great (you can use AP flour) and it works for plums and apples too! I will be watching your Instagram feed for the deliciousness. Thanks, Annette! π€ xx
That fool! Please pass me a large spoon do I can dig in. Interesting that the peach cake recipe calls for bread flour. I wonder why. Hereβs to your imminent bestseller status, Jolene!
I've got a bowl of savaged cherries and a pint of cream in my refrigerator so I know what's in my near future so thank you. What I will not thank you for is the Merman ear worm. I have her disco album around here somewhere...
oh my god, I just googled the Merman disco album and listened to βEverythingβs Cominβ up Rosesβ that sounded like a hybrid with βCar Washβ by Rose Royce, going back to listen to more, thank you, Michael! π Enjoy the Cherries and whipped cream!
What a cute dip bowl! All your suggestions for lazy summer nibbling and the music is a catch. Your Fruit Fool is awesome. We have eaten buckets of fresh cherries this summer and most have been top-notch. I even created a cherry tiramisu, but no pool side here, only a screened-in porch under ceiling fans. Thank you Jolene.
When I was in the school choir in elementary school, that Nat King Cole song was our annual last day anthem. Of course, being children, the teachers appropriately changed it to, βroll out the soda, and pretzels, and cheerβ¦β π»
Another of your posts filled me up. In this case, it was listening to Ethel Merman as it made me think about my parents, my father in particular, who adored her and her songs. That was a lovely memory hit on a Sunday night. I was also pleased that I recognized several of the songs on the record cover.
In addition to you making the Fruit Fool and the peach cake and making them beautiful enough to be photo worthy, the other thing that impressed me in this post was that Irma Rombauer SELF-published this book in 1931. And that was after two life disasters. We know how much strength, courage, and financial and spiritual resources it takes to self-publish a book today and the fact that she as a widow -- a woman -- during the Depression is truly remarkable. I'm sure you know her husband committed suicide, another stigma for him and for her.
Thank you so much, Andrea, glad it brought back good memories! Yes, Irma took tragedy and really defied the odds, changing the way we cook in the process!
Love everything here! Feels so celebratory! Cherries and peaches--bring 'em on.
Yes to bestseller-dom--so deserved!

Good to know about apples if I strike out on peaches! Thanks, Jolene!

the time has come for me to make a strawberry fool - I love thinking of it as "trifle without the cake" - it's a gluten-free dessert!
