What an incredible gift this notebook was. WOW. I would do quite a lot to have a family record like this. Thanks so much for sharing (both Ruth and Jolene)!
Thanks, Sarah. I do feel lucky to have that notebook. There is something special about a handwritten recipe with notes, cross-outs and spills from someone you love who is now gone. I hope that home cooks will continue to write them, even if they save most recipes virtually!
I'm honored and touched that you decided to feature my mother in your post. She was a special person and wonderful home cook and baker. I think she would be astonished and pleased (hopefully!) that her humble notebook and cake recipe have gotten so much attention. I know that I am. Thanks, Jolene. This means a lot.
My pleasure, Ruth. I loved learning a little about your Mom through you and her notebook and I was especially touched by the fact that she recorded the meals that were enjoyed with family and at parties. I’m glad you’re pleased and I hope she would be too. 😊
Mmmmm... love all of this--the photos of the recipes, the story. Looking forward to trying, and think I'll do so with the suggestion of dried cranberries. Thank you, Ruth and Jolene!
This is the first year ever I've been in the States for this holiday. Our Canadian day is so early! Two in one fall--much to be thankful for. And for new friends! Have a blessed Thanksgiving, Jolene.
That coffee cake looks heavenly. I think I have all the ingredients to make it, too. What a treasure that notebook is. I'm lucky to have many of my mom's recipes as well, most written on index cards. Thanks Jolene and Ruth. Happy Thanksgiving to you both.
Happy Thanksgiving, Domenica! I totally agree, that coffee cake is gorgeous. That’s so wonderful that you have your Mom’s recipe cards, absolute treasure ❤️
That cake is emblematic of my childhood. My mom collected and collated a bunch of hand-written recipe cards from my Grandma Ces for my last birthday. What a treasure! I found her Sour Cream Cake recipe that differs just slightly from yours, adding raisins and using brown sugar for the topping.
I am going to make it this week and would love to share it with you.

Would love to see it, Ric, thank you.
Please check out the same recipe my Grandma Ces made all of my life!
