Jolene, this was a super fun post -- I had no idea who Marjorie Merriweather Post was, so I appreciated the quick intro before diving into a Q&A with an author. (Such a great idea to pair things up that way!)
Speaking of breakfast cereal empires, if that interests you (don't ask me why it interests me): if you've never read T.S. Boyle's novel, The Road to Wellville, it's hilarious. It's based on Dr. John Harvey Kellogg's Battle Creek Spa... C.W. Post was a former patient and allegedly stole some of the ideas he consumed, literally and metaphorically, while at the sanatarium (including Postum!)
Lest I nerd out too hard here, let me just say this is fascinating stuff, and thank you for adding a little to my basic knowledge today!
Let’s nerd out, Sarah! Thank you so much, I will definitely get the book, so much interesting history mixed with glamour and tragedy and visionaries and wealth and wars…I’m nerding out 😂 🤗
I am such a fan of Sarah Wassberg Johnson! How fun to have her "talk" a bit about Marjorie and her impact on both food and business. Adding Allison's book to my reading list. And I may even try my had at the Adirondack Pie. In miniature, of course.
Me too! Sarah’s terrific and she covered so much information in such a concise and beautifully written way. Allison’s book is a total treat. And, yes - the crepes were my way of making it smaller, but someday I’d like to make the full-on pie for a crowd :)
I can't believe I've lived just outside DC for so long and have never visited her home. Definitely going as soon as the weather breaks. Looking forward to reading the book. Also, both dessert versions sound amazing. I think my mom had a copy of that crepe book. Now I wish I'd saved it. Thanks for another great read, Jolene.
Thanks, Domenica! Oooh, I’m looking forward to hearing about your visit to her home when the weather gets better. I imagine the gardens are extra beautiful in springtime. :)
Thank you, Jolene, for sharing such an interesting history lesson! Until I read this, I was not familiar with Marjorie; but I made a quick trip to Village Books this afternoon and now have the book. I’ll dig in this week-end. The crepes you made look wonderful! Do you deliver?😊
When my mother met my father and he said he was a "finanziere" she thought she was set for life. However, in Italian, "finanziere" has two meanings: 1) a magnate; 2) a revenue/customs officer. No prizes for guessing which one my father was.

Book and crepes? I'm there. Sold. :)
I just quoted you on Twitter 😂

Love the 70s art... like a post-script! What a great post, Jolene. As always, the combo of history, food, interesting--FUN--visuals... thank you!
Thank you, Alison! I love 70’s art, too!

Desserts! Dance! What more could you ask for
Haha! There’s only one thing missing: Emoji! 💃 🍰 Have a wonderful weekend, Katie!

Since there’s no prize, I’ll go with ‘magnate’ 😂 Thanks, Gianni!
A fascinating post, Jolene! I enjoyed every word and now want to read this book and make those mouthwatering crepes!☺️
Thank you, Ruth! I think you’ll love the book and the crepes are so quick to make! How were the brownies?
Amazing! Almost as pretty as your picture! I had to hide them from my husband, though unfortunately I know where they are!😏
Ha! Enjoy (share with Jeff 😂)!
Fascinating! I had no idea that Dina Merrill was related to the Post cereal empire. The crepes look delicious.
Hi, Vicki! I thought of your lovely sketch of the maple syrup when I was making them, my bottle of syrup looks like your sketch!
Fascinating, Jolene! Thank you for the deep dive!
Thank you so much, Anne! It was fun!
Hi, Amy! Thank you so much, hope you’re well!
You too, Amy! 🤗
