Another home run of a recipe, Jolene! Coffee and chocolate are a heavenly match, but the caramel version sounds great too. As usual, you provide fascinating history lessons on Devil Dogs and devil's food cake. It's fascinating to see the way recipes evolved over the years.

My husband grew up in NYC and got excited at the mention of Devil Dogs and started reminiscing about another childhood treat he loved, Funny Bones--devil's food with a peanut butter cream filling. Perhaps that might be another variation to try. 💕

Thank you, Ruth! And, yes! Tell your husband I remember Funny Bones and peanut butter and chocolate sounds like a good idea for a future newsletter! Have a great weekend!

Let's talk about the Devil Dog and more importantly TODAY'S Devil Dog. My complaint as a kid about the DD was that it was dry and didn't have enough creme between its two layers. Without milk to dunk 'em in they were rough to get down🤣. Sometime in last 10 to 15 years Drakes has has heard my prayers and tweeked their recipe. It is quite clear that TODAY'S DD is far more moist and morecreme filled than the DD's of my youth.

But, as always, I digress. I have to tell ya, I've never encountered coffee frosting. I know you said it wasn't popular back when, but it's news to me today. It sounds great and looks amazing. And it's refreshing to see the old classic Devils Food when everytime I turn around I see Red Velvet Cake. Oy. Enough with the Red Velvet!!?? Ok, see ya next week...

I just read that Drake’s is coming out with (or maybe already did) a Devil Dog dipped in chocolate. So that could be nice. And, yes, a milk chaser was key to enjoying a childhood Devil dog 😂
