Your 1927 American kitchen looks only slightly smaller than my 2001 Japanese kitchen but it probably has more storage space. I know that many American houses have huge kitchens, at least compared to Japan. Have people ever commented on the narrow space where you cook?

Hi, Gianni, not really, it’s not uncommon in city apartments here to have kitchens on the smallish size.

Yes, that's what I thought as soon as I posted my comment.

My wife is always complaining about how small her kitchen is. Still, it's amazing to see all the great dishes people manage to make in such narrow spaces.

You have a very nice newsletter, by the way. As a history major who likes to eat but only cooks once in a while, I really enjoy all the historical references and bits of memoir.

Ah, and thanks for subscribing to Tokyo Calling!

These galley kitchens are really efficient. Small but mighty! :) Glad you are enjoying my newsletter, I’m looking forward to reading yours.

Great recipe, Jolene. 😘

Is it me, or is this lovely recipe begging to be messed around with? I’m sure it’s wonderful—and looks delicious!—but does it want a handful of oats or chopped nuts? Makes me want to riff.

Definitely riff! This recipe is actually more crumble than crisp, I think oats and nuts would be great!

This looks very doable! If only the one person I live with would help me eat it... :) My mom makes an apple cranberry crumble for Thanksgiving that I love. She bakes it in a big white pan that's shaped like an apple.

Yes! Just 5 ingredients! You’ll have to share with a neighbor😂 Your mom’s crumble sounds delicious and I love the idea of the apple 🍎 pan :)

I loved this post, Jolene!!!! Your kitty is so sweet and the kitchen is gorgeous--yes, the lemon wallpaper, your galley kitchen with the 1920's details and the story of the cook book is so interesting and yes, I feel as if I'm time-traveling (with delicious food!) I am going to make the Apple Crisp for my Dad! Love, Jamie P.S. I noticed a familiar looking tea towel in the background! ;)

Yes! I use your beautiful tea towels all the time! (I posted this photo on Instagram last week and mentioned your tea towels, love ‘em) Thanks so much, Jamie and I hope your Dad enjoys the Apple Crisp! Would love to see pictures! ❤️

What a beautiful post, Jolene! I felt like I was inside your kitchen--and I really wished I were. It's also a perfect illustration for the title of your blog. Perhaps it even inspired it? Apple crisp is just the thing to make in that kitchen too--homey, old-fashioned, all-American. And the cat looked right at home! Kudos on another great edition!💕
