I love that you call Kate the pie maestro. That is exactly what she is! Your pie turned out beautiful. And now I’m going to have to do a little investigating into what May 13th has been deemed National Pie Day. Will follow up if I find out.
“Keep everything chilled, especially yourself.” So best! I love this post, Jolene (I mean, I love them all, but this one was just perfect today.)
I'm not much of a pie-eater -- I'm really not much of a sweets-eater and never have been -- but I've come to appreciate pie more in the last couple years, since I've found a tiny in-home bakery in my village that produces the most amazing pies. I really love cherry pie. But I'm also not sure I've ever had blueberry, so I'm putting it on my list to order this summer!
I’m going to put Kate’s wisdom in a frame 🖼 in my kitchen and keep ‘chilled’ ! I love cherry pie, too, how great you found a good place for pie. Thanks so much, Sarah, you’re comments always give me a boost! 🥧❤️

Loooove the painting 🖼🥧😍 "Pies" means "dog" in Polish, so "Pies Pies Pies" made me chuckle a bit 🥧🥧🥧🐶🐶🐶😄 You know, apple pie is one of my favorite desserts! My grandmother used to make the best ones with sour apples from her garden. Now she makes them with the ones from the store. The taste is different but still amazing. Thanks for the history link - I'll give it a read for sure! Have a lovely weekend Jolene ☀️
Oooh, I’ll bet your grandmother’s pie is so delicious! So funny about ‘pies’ 🐶 😂 I love that painting, too and all of his work 🖼 Thanks, Stygi and gave a wonderful weekend!
Your comment made me laugh! “Pies” means “feet” in Spanish and there’s a store here in Madrid called “Pies y Salud” (“Feet and Health”) and my brain always interprets it as “Pies and Salad,” which would be quite an interesting food combo!
Thank you, Jolene, for this wonderful post today! I will make this apple pie for sure. I had the pleasure of meeting Kate and Greta Pie at Village Books in Bellingham. She was on tour with her second book on home cooking. Such a lovely person! ♥️
I loved reading this! Apple pie is the kind I grew up on, so I think it will always be my favorite. I’ve never tried my hand at making a pie, but between you and Kate I feel like I have to at least make a first attempt sometime soon!
Wonderful, Kiki! I see Kate has offered her expert guidance, you are in excellent hands! Thank you for reading and I’m glad it reminded you of pies you grew up with. 🥧❤️
Jolene and I tried to figure that out Danielle because it's seems really strange to me as well. The only thing I can think of is that my apple trees are blooming right now, so maybe it's the "promise" of apple pies to come that gives it it's name.
Every day could be Apple Pie Day as far as I’m concerned as this is probably my favorite--though I just tasted what was undoubtedly the BEST banana cream pie EVER at Gjelina in Venice, CA. Thanks for another great story and for reminding me this is a pie you can make in any season, not just for Thanksgiving. I’ve never tried making one with the skins left on, but it sounds like it would be terrific with heritage apples, most readily available in fall. Think I’ll make pie this weekend!🤗
The menu looks delicious, Ruth. I'll be a bit too far north of Venice at the end of the month, but perhaps on a return trip we can meet up and share the table.
Oh, that Wayne Thiebaud painting is hauntingly good - I can imagine so many folks leaving comments are being those who really could do with a print of it on their wall : )
(And as a history + food nerd, I really enjoyed learning about apples being native to Asia - I will have to dig into that some more...and some pie...)
Interesting article Jolene! Love the ad for Crisco. My mom made delicious pies that would melt in you mouth, but I have never developed her ease with pie dough. She would sometimes serve apple pie with a piece of sharp cheddar. Strawberry rhubarb is my favorite with that combination of sweet and tart.
Hi, Barb! Thank you so much and when you said Brigham’s ice cream I got nostalgic for New England (particularly, Mass.!) Hope your daughter enjoys, have a wonderful weekend! 🥧❤️
Amazing article as always Jolene, thank you! I'm a huge fan of Kate and her work, her book has top priority in my "to buy" list, and her newsletter is brilliant. Gotta hurry up and make the pie before the last of the apples disappear 🍎🍎🍎
Thank you, Amy! I love lemon merengue pie! There’s a link above to the Smithsonian piece about the history of how apple pie became the ‘American Dessert’ Have a wonderful weekend! 🥧❤️

Hi, Leigh! thank you 🙏 🥧Yes, she is the Pie Maestro for sure! Oooh, let us know — I could find nothing except articles about how to celebrate 😂

Omg, dogs and feet! And Pies and Salad - a new dining concept 😂🥧 🥗
Lol Pies and Salad sounds much better than Feet and Health 😆
Hahaha I love this! 😂

Oh, wow! How great you all met! She is a lovely person 😊 Glad you will make the pie, Pam, and thanks so much for reading and your comment. 🥧❤️
I remember that evening! Some book event interviews standout and that was a very special one.
It was special! I loved having GretaPie there, quietly resting under the table!♥️
She’s 10 years young now and still is sweet as ever.

Let me know when you do and if you have any questions...you know where to find me. This video will help with rolling out, too, K. I had a very fun time making it. https://katemcdermott.substack.com/p/75-how-to-make-and-roll-dough?s=w
Terrific and thanks for the link, Kate, I meant to post it! 🥧
Thanks so much, Kate! I love the video, and I always like seeing the process in action so this will definitely help!
That video is a terrific resource!
Why is National Apple Pie Day in *May*?
Ditto what Kate said, Danielle, but I’ll continue to look for clues to this apple pie holiday mystery!
Jolene and I tried to figure that out Danielle because it's seems really strange to me as well. The only thing I can think of is that my apple trees are blooming right now, so maybe it's the "promise" of apple pies to come that gives it it's name.
Bet your kitchen smelled wonderful when that pie was baking! Very nice piece, Jolene!
It did, Anne, but I suddenly felt like it was October! 🤣 🍂 🍎 (it was 90 degrees in Chicago yesterday)

Oh, I am into this!! Thank you for pointing me this way!!
Fun, right? 🎂
Thanks for sharing the recipe, Jolene. I hope you had a piece for breakfast this morning. Breakfast of champions, eh?
Of course!! 🤣🥧❤️
It all looks so delicious, as always Jolene! "The first printed recipe for apple pie dates back to 1381 England" 🤯
Thank you so much, Matt! I know — I was surprised at that date, too. Have a wonderful weekend 🥧❤️

I love a good sharp cheddar with Apple Pie, too, Vicki 😋 and I just put Strawberry Rhubarb on my pie wish list. Have a great weekend! 🥧❤️
Another great article, Jolene. I really enjoy these!
Blueberry pie with Brigham’s vanilla ice cream is my all-time favorite, though apple with the same is a close second.
Shared this with my daughter, as she is still perfecting her pie-making (or I should say crust-making) skills.
Thanks for all of the fun and interesting information!
Barb

I love the advert, ‘it’s digestible’ 😁😂 sounds yummy. This post makes me want to bake an apple pie 🥧 😘😘
