This was just perfect. My local coffee shop makes the best quiche I’ve ever had so we don’t do it much at home, but this is so simple even *I* could manage 😄 And who doesn’t love Julia? She was a gift — as are you.

I love that Julia Child ate what she loved, like this lovely quiche, and lived to an excellent old age. I read and loved Child's letters exchanged with Iris DeVoto, as well as the memoir co-written with her nephew. She was an extraordinary woman. I may try this in her honor, despite my aversion to overly eggy quiches. Thanks, Jolene.
Add cheese! 🤣 🧀 Thanks, Annette, and I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said — have you started watching yet? Watch so we can talk about it. The quiche custard is beautiful, but go with a butter crust or butter/shortening mix. Thanks for your comment 😊
Butter is my first preference with crust! I don't have HBO but may have to for this. Oh, and I love the Sara Moulton interview! Julia's joie de vivre and passion for food are what stick. Also fell about laughing at the "three Fs" 😂😂 Thanks, Jolene.
I loved this! Julie & Julia is a favourite film of mine and I’m yet to see the series but it’s on my list - and available in Finland 🙂 my mouth is watering thinking of eating this quiche 💖
Try a 50-50 butter shortening or lard ratio for the pastry. It will still have that beautiful buttery flavour, but will benefit from the crisp, flaky texture created by the alternative fat. It is how my mother does it, and after trying out so many recipes for my shortcrust to make savoury tarts and quiches (I'm not the most confident pastry maker, even after taking pastry courses!) but I've given up on recipes that tell me to do it another way!
Yes to leaf lard (and fat back) used traditionally in southern Italian pastries like sfogliatelle (sweet) and casatiello (savory). I'm with Jolene on the shortening, though. Much prefer butter!
Thank you Jolene, what a lovely read and what an amazing gift you received. Julia is in my heart, too. I checked and it seems the series won't be available in Italy at the moment 😔 I'll have to re-watch Julie & Julia for the 100th time I guess.
Ooh, I’m so sorry you can get it yet, hopefully soon, Sinù :) And, yes, it is such a lovely gift 😊 I could do the dialogue from Julie & Julia I’ve watching it so many times, too! 🤣
this was definitely a fun piece! And do you to a lifelong fandom I’ve had with quiche, I’ll have to try this recipe. Though mine, sadly, needs to be gluten-free, and I may just make it crust-free. but I have all the ingredients for the custard so I should just get on with it today! :-) Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the interview. And thanks for the tip about the show - I hadn’t heard about it. I don’t have HBO Max but the list of shows that I want to watch has grown to the point where I think I may have to go ahead and splurge.
Wow. I was unprepared for just how amazing this quiche would be. I was a little skeptical because it only calls for three eggs, but it is so tasty. Julia definitely knew what she was doing. 🤩
Yeah I like the flour, but I’m not sure I’m up to pie crust making with it. But I went to the store and got a gluten-free crust, which of course is cheating (and Julia Child is probably rolling in her grave) but I think I’m good to go to make quiche!
Whoa! What a generous friend! 🤩👏📚 Great timing with this issue - I've just started watching "Julia" on HBO Max couple days ago, and I just l-o-v-e it! Can't wait to try this quiche recipe 🧑🍳
Thanks for the reminder about how much we love Julia and why I should make a point of watching the series about her on HBO-Max. My mother and so many women of her generation completely changed how they cooked after reading "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." I can't wait to hear your interview with Sara Moulton about Julia. That quiche looks scrumptious, but I'm with you--I love butter, though the debate over which fat to use and how much will go on forever. I hope you do too. Such a fun read!
Enjoy the quiche, Pam! I loved Cooking Live too, talk about flying without a net and grace under pressure! I will share your kind comments with Sara ☺️
Thanks, Anne! Wondering about Wondra should be an article. I even mentioned it to Sarah and she was like ‘Really?’ I think Wondra came out around the same time as The French Chef, I’ll investigate 🕵️♂️
You chuckled over the bacon, heavy cream, and eggs for a light lunch; I chuckled about the bottle of wine. I loved the mingling of your voice with that of Julia’s in this post.
Thank you so much, Randee 😊 Love your chuckling over the wine! It’s so funny though, eating the quiche with the salad and a glass of wine actually felt ‘lighter’ than some other lunches I’ve had recently! 😂
That photo of Julia is amazing.
Agreed! Playful and formidable all at once.

Sarah, let’s put your local coffee shop quiche on the list of TTK on the road? As always, thank you for your very kind comment ☺️
Yes! (I live in a suburb of Madison, but yes.)

I love Julie & Julia, too, Lisa! I’m so glad it’s available in Finland for you. The quiche custard is delicious 😋 thanks for reading!

50/50 butter/lard* is my go to pastry and it is the dough I have been teaching since 2008.
*I specifically use leaf lard.

Hi, Domenica! Thanks for sharing this info - now I want sfogliatelle! ❤️
What on earth is leaf lard??
Here's a short piece I wrote about it years ago. https://artofthepie.com/leaf-lard/
Fantastic - here's my lunchtime reading then today!
It’s the lard from around the kidneys and considered the most pure. I know that because I just interviewed a hog farmer for my Southern baking book! 🤣
Mind blown. Never even considered that there was more to lard than, well, just lard until just now.
Oh Lard, there’s so much to learn about it. 😂
Praise the Lard!
😂
Anne, can’t wait to read that chapter! 🤣
50/50 it is then!
Thank you, Rachel! (And thank Mom, too!:)

I trust in the dark power of the net to find the series 😉
😂👍
I think it looks perfect!
It's my late mother's namesake, too, so I'll always think fondly of this one <3
Thank you so much, Jess, and thanks for sharing about your Mom. ❤️

I signed up for HBO Max just for this, Jackie! 😂 Let me know how quiche goes, King Arthur’s has a good gluten-free flour.
Wow. I was unprepared for just how amazing this quiche would be. I was a little skeptical because it only calls for three eggs, but it is so tasty. Julia definitely knew what she was doing. 🤩
Delicious. right? 😋 it’s just perfect, I’m so glad you made and enjoyed it, Jackie!

I know! A lovely gift :) ooh, glad you’re watching too, I just finished the first 6 episodes, can’t wait for more! ❤️

Thank you Ruth, this is why we are friends 😂 (among many other reasons) TEAM BUTTER 🧈 💛 hope you’re well.
I thought that was a green salad in the background! A beautiful quiche and an elegant lunch. What could be better?
Sara Moulton is a favorite of mine. I loved her Cooking Live show, what a star she is. I’m looking forward to learning more about Sara and Julia.
Meanwhile, I’m going to make quiche!😊
Enjoy the quiche, Pam! I loved Cooking Live too, talk about flying without a net and grace under pressure! I will share your kind comments with Sara ☺️
Lovely, Jolene. You captured Julia beautifully. And I, too, wonder about that Wondra!
Thanks, Anne! Wondering about Wondra should be an article. I even mentioned it to Sarah and she was like ‘Really?’ I think Wondra came out around the same time as The French Chef, I’ll investigate 🕵️♂️

Looks scrumptious! I have never heard of instant flour. Interesting!
I’m investigating why she used Wondra. It’s great in things like gravy, need to learn more, Vicki!
Hmmm. I have to look into it.

“I learned she was from Pasadena!” 🤣 Yes, a very good year, Amy! Hope you’re well and TEAM BUTTAH FOREVER! 🧈 💛
