" & lead us not into Temptation, because we're perfectly capable of finding it on our own ". I've read variations of this on hundreds of bumper stickers, LOL. 😁😹
I’m excited to try this and glad you shared the dusting instead of icing…i try to reduce sugar when I can. I'd love to know how you make sugared cranberries.
So funny, Julia, when I first saw the recipe several years ago I thought putting “velvet” in the title immediately made it sound delicious — and the cake delivered!
Mmmmm. I might make this in addition to fruitcake. Just LOVE “Joy” and I bought the reprint of the first edition after you wrote about it many moons ago. JOC will never go out of style—at least not at my house! Thanks, Jolene!
That's a beautiful cake, Jolene, and isn't wonderful to keep it unadorned with icing. Your touches of the candied cranberries, orange zest, and powder sugar allow the spices to shine. Really well done. I admire anyone who can make a bundt cake.
Thank you so much! Totally agree, a dusting of powdered sugar was all it needed. By the way, I ordered (and received) “Scandikitchen Christmas” after you wrote about it, just in time for St. Lucia! 🕯️ (my Mom was Swedish and German)
Omg this sounds so delicious! And since I’m not a huge fan of icing, I love your alternative toppings of candied orange rind and sugared cranberries (tips on how to make those please!) - yum yum yum 😋
Irma Rombauer was a remarkable lady. Imagine! Writing and publishing a cookbook in the Depression when she wasn't known for her stellar culinary skills.
Here's a nice quotation I found in her Wikipedia profile that sums up the lady she was.
"The best thing about The Joy of Cooking, however, is the voice of its author, Irma Rombauer. She engages in a constant dialogue with her readers, telling stories about herself and her family, sprinkling the text with genuine witticisms and excruciatingly corny puns, and making sure everybody knows that cooking is not an occult science or esoteric art, but part of the everyday work of the vast majority of women (and a few men) that can be turned into fun with her help."
I need to remind myself AGAIN that this is NOT the season to try to go on a DIET ! It's like building a sand castle in a hurricane, LOL.
100%

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Reminds me of the Bundt cake from the movie My Greek Wedding.
That is one STUNNER of a cake!! Adding that to my baking list 😍
Hi, Jenovia! It’s a good one! ✨
Ooh! That cake!
It’s really a great recipe, Mary! 🍰
Gorgeous cake, and Joy cover!! I’d never seen that version
Don’t you love it, Amie, Slaying the drudgery of cooking! 🍳 🐉
That cake and stand is fabulous and the name - velvet spice cake, who wouldn't want to eat that!

I’m with you, Ruth, and I’m glad you got it, I love the cover and reading Irma’s intro! ❤️
This post cheered me. Thank you!
Thank you for telling me this, Christiana, and I’m glad! ✨
"scant" is such a great word.
Right?

I hope you enjoy it! You come from a line that has fantastic Christmas traditions. Almost hard to choose which to do. I suspect you do them all. :D
And my father was Irish, so there’s all of those traditions, too! Love them all ❤️

Here’s the recipe for the cranberries, Sabrina! ❤️ https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/sugared-cranberries/

Thanks for this, Andrea, love it! ❤️
The cake is beautiful and such a lovely presentation. I was wondering about the cake platter so thanks for mentioning the source! 🎄
It’s one of my favorites, Pam!
without fail, my brain reads Irma Rombauer as “Erma Bombeck”… I have face blindness for names 😂
Ha!
